Striking for climate justice

On 3 May, the IEU once again stood in solidarity with students striking for climate justice outside Federal Minister for the Environment Tanya Plibersek’s office.

Led by the students, fellow unionists, teachers, parents and grandparents gathered as young people addressed the rally and expressed their concerns and anxiety over the future of our planet.

Huddled under umbrellas to shelter from the driving rain, one by one they spoke about how we need community-led solutions to the climate crisis and how they will not rest or be silent.

“The forces of the earth will always out-compete the innovations of man when thrown out of balance,” said a student striker, El, in a speech at the rally.

“We are restless. We are scared. And it has come to the point where we believe that if we don’t strike, nature will strike,” said El, who comes from a mining-dependent town in the Upper Hunter region.

Climate justice is union business! We will continue to stand with students and communities on the front lines of climate change.
