Enterprise agreements covering teachers and support staff in Catholic systemic schools in NSW and the ACT expire next year and negotiations will commence for new agreements and associated Work Practices Agreements.
Member engagement is essential to this process. Better wages, conditions and job security are the result of members who are visible, informed and willing to support each other collectively.

Active members are the best advocates for recruiting new union members in their workplaces. Their advocacy is visible and powerful.
Voting in union elections increases when members are active and engaged.
Greater engagement leads to higher attendance at chapter and sub branch meetings where members can see and contribute to the democratic processes that strengthen the union’s effectiveness.

What inspired you to become actively engaged with your union?
Early in my own career, I was a member of the consultative committee in the Canberra Goulburn Diocese. We met each term to bring issues to the employer’s attention.
It was a highly effective committee, and it allowed me to effect change by representing my colleagues and advocating for improvements in their working lives.
I also firmly believe that working closely with individual colleagues who need union support is another way to demonstrate the union’s value and attract more members.
