Achieving fairness and validity in assessments

Ensuring fairness in assessments is a cornerstone of effective education, closely tied to the principle of validity.

This course empowers teachers to:

•understand the concept of validity and its importance in accurately measuring what is intended in assessments

•identify and mitigate threats to validity to create fair assessments for all students

•evaluate the validity of their own assessments, using evidence to support their judgments

•apply the concept of validity to assess students’ knowledge, skills, and values more effectively.

By focusing on fairness and validity, this course helps educators create more equitable learning environments and improve the quality of their assessment practices.

CEMA Course 3

Achieving consistent and comparable in assessments judgments across the school

Measurement error is an inherent aspect of all assessments, affecting their consistency and reliability.

This course empowers teachers to:

•understand the concept of reliability and its role in achieving consistent and comparable judgments across a school

•identify sources of error in assessments and apply strategies to minimise them

•examine summative assessments (eg NAPLAN) and formative assessments (eg observation and questioning) to enhance reliability

•use assessment results as evidence to confirm or question students’ performance for a more accurate understanding of achievement.

By focusing on reducing measurement errors, this course equips educators with the tools to improve the reliability of their assessments, leading to better-informed decisions about student learning.
